Senior Fitness & Martial Arts Classes in Chicago

Silver Dragons: Training for Strength, Balance, and Longevity (Ages 65+)

True martial arts training isn’t just for competitive athletes—it is a lifelong practice designed to keep your body resilient, your mind sharp, and your movement fluid at every stage of life.

The Silver Dragons program at EKF Martial Arts is a specialized, low-impact fitness and martial arts class explicitly designed for seniors ages 65 and over. Located right on the North Side of Chicago, we provide a welcoming, ego-free environment where you can build functional strength and reclaim your vitality alongside a supportive community.

The Three Pillars of Silver Dragons

Our curriculum blends ancient mindful movement with modern physical conditioning. Every exercise is entirely customizable to your current fitness level and joint comfort.

  1. Tai Chi for Balance & Flow

Often described as "moving meditation," Tai Chi utilizes slow, deliberate, and fluid movements to radically improve your balance, spatial awareness, and deep joint mobility. It is one of the most effective, doctor-recommended practices for fall prevention and stress reduction.

  2. Low-Impact Mitt Work for Coordination

Bring focus and agility back to your reflexes. Using padded target mitts, you will practice basic, non-contact martial arts striking combinations. There is no sparring or "fighting" here—just pure, low-impact training that boosts cognitive agility, hand-eye coordination, and cardiovascular health.

  3. Functional Strength Training

Maintaining muscle mass and bone density is the ultimate key to independent living. We integrate safe, light weightlifting exercises tailored to reinforce your posture, protect your lower back, and make everyday movements—like lifting groceries or climbing stairs—feel effortless.

"We don't stop training because we get old; we get old because we stop training."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Absolutely not. The vast majority of our Silver Dragons have never stepped foot inside a martial arts gym before. This program is built from the ground up specifically for beginners. We introduce every single movement, stance, and breath pattern at a comfortable pace—no one is expected to know anything on day one.

  • No. There is zero sparring, zero contact between students, and zero fighting. We focus strictly on training for health, longevity, and coordination. When we do martial arts combinations, you will be striking padded targets (mitt work) held by an instructor, or practicing solo Tai Chi forms. Your safety is our absolute highest priority.

  • Yes, you can. Martial arts is fundamentally about working with your body, not against it. Because our head coach, Anthony Marquez, brings decades of elite technical movement experience, we specialize in modifying exercises. If a certain stance bothers your knees, or a specific movement strains your shoulder, we will show you an alternative variation that achieves the exact same physical benefit without the pain.

Note: We always recommend checking in with your primary care doctor before starting any new physical program, and we are happy to adjust our curriculum to match any medical guidelines they give you.

  • Every class is structured to be low-impact and highly engaging. A standard 45-to-50-minute session flows through three distinct parts:

    1. The Warm-Up & Tai Chi: Slow, mindful movements to gently lubricate your joints, raise your core temperature, and establish deep, steady breathing.

    2. Coordination & Reflexes: Light target pad work to stimulate cognitive focus, agility, and cardiovascular conditioning.

    3. Strength & Balance: Tailored, functional weightlifting and balancing drills designed to reinforce your posture and protect against falls.

  • We are located at 5951 N Clark St on Chicago’s North Side, right on the border of the Edgewater and Andersonville neighborhoods.
