What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) uses a variety of techniques, including striking, clinch fighting, wrestling, and submissions. It is both a combat sport and a system of self-defense.

In order to excel at Mixed Martial Arts, a practitioner should be versed in the various phases of combat: Stand-up Fighting, Clinch Fighting, and Ground Fighting. Because every style of martial arts emphasizes different methods of subduing opponents, a practitioner ideally should absorb the most effective elements from several different styles. Some of the most common forms of martial arts seen within MMA competitions today are: San Shou, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, and Boxing.

Here at EKF Martial Arts, we offer classes in:

Sanshou, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, and MMA.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that specializes in grappling and ground fighting. Practitioners control opponents through joint-locks and chokeholds. Striking is not allowed.
  • All skill levels, including complete beginners, can attend our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. Students are also encouraged to practice with each other before and after classes. We have plenty of mats and open space for those who want to put in the extra hours.

Boxing

  • Boxing skills and techniques are taught with a technical and analytical approach. This class is truly a thinking man's approach to "the sweet science".

Muay Thai

  •  Muay Thai Kickboxing is referred to as the Art of the 8 Limbs. This is because equal emphasis is placed on striking with hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Muay Thai is particularly known for its straight-forward approach and aggressive strategies.
  • Our Muay Thai classes offer both highly technical instruction and thorough conditioning.

MMA

Students learn to strike, clinch, and throw in the Sanshou, Muay Thai, and Boxing classes. Ground positioning and submissions are worked on in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. Our MMA classes bridge the gap between standup fighting and ground fighting by expanding on the clinch game and by covering the ground and pound element that is unique to MMA.

Eliminator

  • Bagwork, medicine ball training, plyometrics, weight training, and various bodyweight exercises are incorporated into this high intensity workout. This class vastly improves strength, explosive power, and aerobic endurance. These elements are key for fighters and fitness enthusiasts alike.
